A press conference at the White House, scheduled for Friday, where U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy planned to sign the U.S.-Ukraine minerals deal, was canceled after a fiery exchange between the two sides.
The deal would give the U.S. access to Ukraine's deposits of rare earth minerals, and the U.S. wants substantial "payback" for its previous support to Ukraine. In exchange, Ukraine seeks future support and concrete security guarantees from the U.S.
Ukraine is estimated to have about 5 percent of the world's critical raw materials, including approximately 19 million tonnes of proven graphite reserves, which are used to make batteries for electric vehicles.
