Lotus-shaped designs were one of the most popular artistic patterns for decorations during the Southern and Northern Dynasties over 1,400 years ago. With the propagation and rise of Indian Buddhism, the lotus patterns from China and Indian Buddhism mutually influenced each other and integrated perfectly to be massively applied and developed quickly, coming to their peak during those years. In the Xiangtangshan Caves in Handan, Hebei Province, lotus designs were usually seen in important positions, such as thrones, headlights and backlights. The lotus petals are mainly true-to-life while the flowers are gorgeous and forceful with smooth and elegant lines.
