Shanghai is at the forefront of adopting smart elderly care solutions as China's population rapidly ages. With over 37-percent of its residents aged 60 and above, the city is embracing technology to ensure the safety and quality of life of seniors. Lin Nan reports.

Liu Caijuan is one of many elderly residents benefiting from digital healthcare solutions. Through an online hospital system, she can now consult with doctors remotely, discussing treatment and medication without leaving her care facility.

LIU CAIJUAN Resident of Elderly Care Facility "At first, I needed a caregiver to take me to the hospital. But now, with online services, I can consult doctors directly. It's much more reassuring."

Liu's experience highlights Shanghai's digital transformation in elderly care, improving access to healthcare and providing peace of mind for families.

Ding Ling's facility is benefiting directly from these advances.

DING LING Director, Changning Wanhong Yuexin Elderly Care Facility "Before, families had concerns when sending loved ones to an elderly care facility. They worried about what would happen after they left. But with our system, family members can see real-time updates on their loved ones' health status, activities, and care routines. This has greatly increased their trust in our facility."

Shanghai's recent "Action Plan for Advancing the Development of Elderly Care Technology" aims to make the city a national hub for elderly care innovation by 2027.

LIN NAN Shanghai "Shanghai is China's most rapidly aging city, with over 37% of its population aged 60 and above. This is driving demand for mobility aids and elderly care solutions."

This shift is fueling Shanghai's silver economy, with a growing market for products tailored to seniors. 80-year-old Feng Yizhan is exploring options like custom wheelchairs to meet her needs.

FENG YIZHAN Shanghai Resident "There are so many products here that cater to the diverse needs of elderly people. It's great because we all have different health conditions and needs. I'm really impressed with this place because it offers so many options."

Assistant product showcase centers are also helping seniors access essential aids to improve their daily lives.

SHEN YU Chairman, Shanghai Prosthetics Factory Co., Ltd. "This platform has been a great demonstration of what's possible, offering a wide range of products that many elderly people didn't even know existed. We hope to see more of these centers across Shanghai and beyond."

From smart elderly care solutions to dedicated product showcase centers, Shanghai is laying a strong foundation for a more inclusive environment for its seniors.

These innovations are improving the lives of elderly residents while contributing to the rapid expansion of the city's silver economy.
