And for more on Europe's response to the heated meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy, CGTN's Natalie Carney spoke to Tim Büthe - Chair of International Relations at the School of Politics and Public Policy at the Technical University of Munich.
TIM BUTHE Chair, International Relations, School of Politics and Public Policy, Technical University of Munich "The initial reaction has been just shock, how badly and how quickly that conversation deteriorated into essentially a shouting match. And I think they also has been just shocked that this was conducted in front of the rolling cameras. The sort of medium term reaction very quickly, nonetheless, with the exception of, singularly exception really of Viktor Orbán from Hungary, has been to unit behind Ukraine and to reassure the Ukrainians of European support. Now that's easier said in words than done and we'll have to see what that actually amounts to."
NATALIE CARNEY CGTN "Will President Trump's tone towards Zelenskyy add to the tensions that we're already seeing develop between the US and Europe?"
TIM BUTHE Chair, International Relations, School of Politics and Public Policy, Technical University of Munich "Yes, it will surely add to a sense in Europe, and has added to a sense I think, that the current US government is willing to exploit the power imbalance that exists, of course between the United States and Europe, for the benefit of the United States at the expense of its allies and at the expense of others. And and that's really the key change, right? The United States is always pursued itself interest, no matter what Trump says. Now so have others. The Europeans, the Chinese, the Russians, other countries, they pursue their self-interest too and and it would be irresponsible of a political leader not to pursue the self interests of their own country. The question is, what is that self-interest and how broad and longer-term do you think of this, and how short term and narrowly selfish is that self-interest perceived, and Trump gives the impression now that he essentially wants to turn the United States into a kind of 19th century colonial Empire instead. And and that is of course leading to enormous levels of irritation and concerns in Europe, but also surely in many other parts of the world."
