Hangzhou has built a thriving ecosystem for innovative companies, where top talent fuels strong businesses, and vice versa. Is this success driven by government support, a skilled talent pool, and a high quality of life? To explore these factors, our reporter Wang Tianyu visited the city.
Recently, Hangzhou has stepped into the spotlight for its thriving technological and innovative companies.
And it's worth noting that many of the talents behind those companies were educated locally.
Take Liang Wenfeng, the founder of DeepSeek, which went viral recently for its AI achievements. He graduated from Zhejiang University, a top research university in Hangzhou, often compared to Stanford.
Jiang Pengfei, another Zhejiang University alumnus, completed his PhD studies a decade ago. He chose to stay in Hangzhou, securing a job with his current company, and has stayed ever since.
JIANG PENGFEI Vice President and Software Director, SHINING 3D "Hangzhou is a very appealing place for talents. Every year, you can see many people choosing to come to or stay in the city, thanks to government support like housing subsidies, which help graduates reduce living costs."
Jiang can barely remember the exact amount of housing subsidies he received as it was many years ago, only that it was around a few thousand dollars each year for three years.
However, he won't forget how much it has helped him.
"The subsidy covered almost all of rent."
Ying Hui, a young engineer at the same company, who also got doctorate degree from Zhejiang University, received a 100,000 yuan subsidy for talents from the local government.
But for him, Hangzhou's natural environment is the biggest draw.
YING HUI Algorithm Engineer, SHINING 3D "I didn't initially plan to stay in Hangzhou, but it was always my top choice because of its great living environment and conveniences, such as weekend activities like camping."
Ultimately, the key factor that led both Jiang and Ying to stay in Hangzhou was that they found companies that could support their career paths.
This has created a positive cycle in the city: better talent creates better companies, and better companies attract better talent.
