The vast Guangdong countryside is dotted with hundreds of striking fortresses that resemble Western castles. These are the Kaiping Diaolou. As Guangdong's only UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Kaiping Diaolou and Villages are a unique fusion of East and West, and a testament to the deep connection that overseas Chinese feel to their homeland. These remarkably well-preserved historic towers, numbering 1,833 in all, have provided iconic backdrops for films such as "Let the Bullets Fly."
