Mu Guiying is a renowned legendary heroine from ancient China's Northern Song Dynasty over 1,000 years ago, and a prominent figure in the Chinese folk tale "Generals of the Yang Family Legends." Her bravery and intelligence have inspired people for centuries, and she has long been considered a symbol of steadfast womanhood in Chinese culture.
In the ongoing shadow puppet exhibition "Dian Xi Yi Ben – Shadow Puppetry and Contemporary Art Exhibition," currently being held at the Nanchizi Museum in Beijing, the image of Mu Guiying has been transformed into shadow puppet works by artists.
The artwork "Peach Blossom Horse" was created by Wang Haiyan, a fourth-generation inheritor of Wang's shadow puppetry. The 3.8-meter-tall shadow puppet of Mu, created using the technique of hollowed-out paper cuttings, stands in armor holding a long spear with an imposing and heroic presence. With the light shining through the decorative windows, the shadow puppet of Mu Guiying looks even more majestic and magnificent.
