U.S. tariffs of 25 percent on goods from Canada and Mexico took effect on March 4. President Donald Trump said on March 3: "Tomorrow, tariffs, 25 percent on Canada and 25 percent on Mexico, and that will start … So what they are going to have to do is (to) build their car plants and other things in the United States."
A CGTN stringer in Canada interviewed locals about the tariffs. Interviewees generally agreed that the additional duties would harm the economies of both the U.S. and Canada. One said, "This policy will not really harm Canadian producers and farmers, but rather they will probably harm the American people because they will be the guys paying the price of this tariff."
