Buyunchaokete of China defeated home teenager Nishesh Basavareddy 7-5, 6-4 in the men's singles first round at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, on Wednesday.

Buyunchaokete kept a solid advantage during most time in the competition. He earned seven break points and converted three of them. By contrast, Basavareddy broke him only once.

The Chinese praised Basavareddy after the match. "I feel both nervous and excited since it's my first time to play at Indian Wells, not to mention at the center court," Bu said. "Basavareddy is a young Next Gen player. We know each other well and have practiced together during Challenger events. We both performed at high level today. I just tried to enjoy the match and forget about everything else. I'm proud of my performance today."

The victory ended the 10-match losing streak by Chinese players in Tour events recently. It was also Buyunchaokete's first Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Masters win outside China.

Buyunchaokete will face Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the next round.
