As China's Two Sessions – a top yearly political event – is underway, China's seeking to pull out all the stops on homegrown talent development. Fields medalist Professor Shing-Tung Yau sees a rise in China's world-class math students, with many emerging in the next five years. Yau and his team are leading China's bid to host the 2030 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2030), aiming to inspire young students to take the lead in global math research. He pointed out, unlike in Japan and the UK, many Chinese students have a passion for math, and the country's growing investment in basic science is paying off.
