The Maldives' stunning geography, while a dream for travelers, poses significant healthcare challenges for its residents. Thousands suffer from cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, with limited access to treatment due to a shortage of ophthalmologists, especially on outer islands. Since 2016, Chinese medical teams have been transforming lives through the "Bright Journey" initiative, offering free eye screenings and surgeries. In 2020, the China-Maldives International Ophthalmology Center was established, equipped with state-of-the-art technology to enhance local eye care. Over the past decade, seven Chinese medical teams have treated over 6,000 patients and performed 700 surgeries, bringing not only vision but also hope and renewal.
