The tale of the "Monkey King" Sun Wukong causing chaos in the heavens is well known both in China and internationally. Now, this classic scene has become a theme for shadow puppetry artists to portray.
The shadow puppetry piece "The Havoc in Heaven" was created by Wang Tianwen, a third-generation inheritor of Wang shadow puppetry. Wang combined shadow puppetry with traditional Chinese meticulous painting techniques, and brought light and shadow effects to the artwork. The grandeur of the Heavenly Palace, the bustling Flower-Fruit Mountain and the dramatic storyline are all brought to life in the creation.
"The Havoc in Heaven" is currently on display at the "Dian Xi Yi Ben – Shadow Puppetry and Contemporary Art Exhibition" at Nanchizi Museum in Beijing.
