Wang Xinyu of China defeated former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-4, 6-4 in the women's singles second round at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, on Friday. Reaching the third round also matches Wang's career-best at the tournament.

The last time Ostapenko faced Wang, she secured an easy win while conceding no more than five games in total. She began the first set with a 2-10 lead, but then committed more and more mistakes, allowing Wang to come back.

Ostapenko blew a 40-15 advantage in the seventh game, conceding five straight points and a break. Wang claimed the first set 6-4 for a 1-0 lead in the match.

Wang extended her remarkable form to the second set, which she started with a 2-0 advantage. Ostapenko calmed down after smashing her racket and the battle returned to a close state. Wang trailed 40-15 in the eighth game, but managed to hold in the end after hitting two aces. She clinched the set 6-4 again for the final win.

Wang will face No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula of the U.S. next.
