A man who had been paralyzed for two years has become the world's first fully paralyzed person to walk again after undergoing a minimally invasive brain-spine interface (BSI) surgery in Shanghai. He is among the world's first four cases to complete proof-of-concept surgeries, jointly developed by Fudan University's Zhongshan Hospital and its Institute of Science and Technology for Brain-Inspired Intelligence. The surgery involves implanting two electrode chips into the patient's motor cortex – a medical breakthrough offering new hope to approximately 20 million people worldwide who suffer from spinal cord injuries, often deemed incurable.
