The Xiangtangshan Grottoes represent the pinnacle of cave art during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, from 420 to 589 AD. The ancient Indian cave culture spread to China along the Silk Road through the Hexi Corridor. The social classes of the time worshipped Sakyamuni, which spurred the rapid development of Buddhism and propelled the cave culture into a period of prosperity. The elaborate carving techniques and fine designs are highly regarded to this day. The Xiangtangshan Grottoes are located halfway up Mount Gu in Handan, Hebei Province.
