The phenomenal success of the Chinese video-game "Black Myth: Wukong" has led to a cultural tourism boom in Shanxi Province. One of Shanxi's most renowned historic sites is the Yungang Grottoes, which is on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. In 2024, the site attracted nearly 4.5 million visitors, a new high. Hang Kan, a National People's Congress (NPC) deputy and director of the Yungang Research Institute, explained how the tourism boom is balanced with a need for heritage protection.
