Shadow puppetry and paper cuttings are two important forms of traditional Chinese folk art. The "Dian Xi Yi Ben – Shadow Puppetry and Contemporary Art Exhibition" featuring the two forms of intangible cultural heritage is currently being held at the Nanchizi Museum in Beijing.
The exhibition has invited more than 10 masters of shadow puppetry and paper-cutting as well as contemporary artists to display a total of 24 works of art. According to the organizers at the Nanchizi Museum, the title of the exhibition – Dian Xi – refers to a common practice in Chinese opera dating back to the Yuan Dynasty nearly eight centuries ago. The exhibition continues its tradition of independent exhibition design, which sees the deep integration of these artworks and the space.
Based on shadow puppetry and paper cuttings, all the creations come to life under the interplay of light and shadow through paintings, sculptures, installations and other forms of contemporary art.
The shadow puppetry contemporary art exhibition will run until April 13, 2025.
