Top seed Shi Yuqi made a solid start at the All England Open on Tuesday, outclassing Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in the first round.
Shi, who is aiming for his second title at this prestigious tournament after triumphing over compatriot Lin Dan in the 2018 final, established a strong foothold by taking a 16-9 lead in the opening game with a powerful smash, ultimately winning it 21-13. The world number one maintained his momentum in the second game, swiftly launching an attack that put him ahead 11-6.
At 29 years old, Shi is eager for further success in 2025 after clinching the World Tour finals title last year. He sealed his victory against the Indonesian player with a commanding 21-8 score in the second game and will next face Chou Tien Chen from Chinese Taipei.
Seventh seed Lee Zii Jia also began his campaign with promise but faced a challenging match against Ng Ka Long Angus from China's Hong Kong.
Despite winning the first game 21-19, Lee found himself on the back foot as Angus fought back to take the second game 21-16. In a gripping third game, Angus surged ahead, establishing an 18-12 lead. Unfortunately for Lee, the former men's singles champion in Birmingham was unable to mount a comeback and ultimately lost the decider 21-12. Angus advanced to the last 16 and will meet Singapore's Loh Kean Yew in his next match.
