Wang Chuqin of China battled from behind to defeat Tomokazu Harimoto 4-1 in the men's singles semifinals at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Champions in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality on Sunday.
After beating Harimoto 10 times in their previous 12 meetings, Wang had hopes of jumping out to a 1-0 overall advantage when he led 10-9 in the opener. But Harimoto scored three straight points to claim the first game instead.
Despite the setback, Wang refused to panic. He continued to showcase solid offensive tactics and built an early edge of 6-1 in the second game, before putting it away 11-5 to level the match.
Wang didn't leave his opponent much room to fight back. He took the third game 11-6 and the fourth 11-5. Harimoto worked hard as he attempted to rally in the fifth, but Wang sealed the deal 11-7 to clinch his place in the final.
Wang will vie for the title against his compatriot Lin Shidong, who eliminated Liang Jingkun to emerge from the other side of the bracket.
On the women's side, Sun Yingsha defeated Wang Yidi 4-2 in an all-Chinese semifinal. Wang led 2-0 after claiming the first two games by identical scores of 11-9, but Sun bounced back to take four consecutive games 11-9, 11-6, 13-11, 11-5 in a remarkable rally that sent her into the championship contest.
Sun will face another compatriot, Chen Xingtong, in the final. Chen advanced to the title match after Wang Manyu retired in the fourth game of their match due to injury.
