Liaoning came from behind to beat Guangdong 3-2 on Saturday in Ningbo, east China's Zhejiang Province, at the men's team table tennis qualifying tournament for the 15th National Games of China in November.
Lin Gaoyuan and Li Yijie defeated Xu Haidong and Yuan Licen 3-2 in the opening doubles match, giving Guangdong a 1-0 lead. Lin then extended their advantage to 2-0 after beating Yuan 3-1 in the ensuing singles contest.
But 45-year-old veteran Hou Yingchao turned the competition around after edging Zhou Qihao 3-2 and Li Yijie 3-1 in the third and fourth matches.
That brought up a decider in which Xu swept past Zhou 3-0 to complete the comeback victory for Liaoning.
In another men's team showdown, event debutant Liang Jingkun contributed a standout performance in Hebei's 3-0 win over Gansu. Liang and Zhou Yu thrashed Wei Chen and Zhao Feng 3-0 in the doubles, before Liang Yanning hammered Ding Shixian 3-0 and Zhou Yu crushed Zhao Feng in the singles to seal the deal for Hebei.
