In 1937, an investigation team from the Society for the Study of Chinese Architecture came across Foguang Temple, breaking the myth that Tang-dynasty (618-907) buildings had only survived in Japan. Nestled in the scenic Wutai Mountain region of Shanxi Province, Foguang Temple is one of China's most treasured Buddhist sites. Built in 857 during the Tang Dynasty, it is renowned for housing some of the world's oldest and best-preserved wooden structures.
