The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council has reiterated that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to China. The office said there are no 'international waters' in the Strait, and that China opposes all illegal activities in the Strait that endanger China's sovereignty and security.

CHEN BINHUA, Spokesperson, Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council "There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is a part of China. Both sides of the Taiwan Strait are Chinese territory, and China enjoys sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction over the Taiwan Strait. According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and Chinese domestic law, there is no such things as 'international waters' in the Strait, as it includes China's internal waters, territorial sea, contiguous zone and exclusive economic zone. In fact, there is no such thing as 'international waters' in international maritime law. China respects the navigation rights enjoyed by all countries in relevant waters of the Strait in accordance with Chinese law and international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea but firmly opposes relevant countries' illegal activities that provoke and endanger China's sovereignty and security in the name of 'freedom of navigation'. The Lai Ching-te authorities betray the national interest and rely on foreign countries to seek independence. They ignore the facts, and use fabricated so-called 'reports' to cater to the United States. This is shameful and will be in vain."
