Friday marked the 66th anniversary of the democratic reform that ended feudal serfdom in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, with multiple grand celebrations and commemorative activities held across the region.
On March 28, 1959, feudal serfdom was abolished as part of the democratic reform in Xizang and approximately one million serfs were emancipated. In 2009, the regional people's congress announced March 28 as the day to commemorate the emancipation of the 1 million serfs.
