Earlier, our reporter Sun Ye spoke with Wang Tun, the Director of the Natural Disaster Early Warning Research Center at Sichuan University, about what to expect from aftershocks following the earthquake.

WANG TUN, Director, Institute of Care-Life; Director, Natural Disaster, Early Warning Research Center, Sichuan University "The impact on China is relatively minor. However, based on information seen online, Thailand has already experienced destructive effects from the earthquake. They are relatively close to the epicenter. From what we currently understand, due to the poor economic conditions in Thailand and Myanmar, their buildings have relatively weak earthquake resistance. The damage to buildings caused by this earthquake is likely to be quite substantial."

SUN YE, CGTN Reporter "You said people should watch out for aftershocks in the coming days, there could be many of them."

WANG TUN, Director, Institute of Care-Life; Director, Natural Disaster, Early Warning Research Center, Sichuan University "Yes, that's correct. This is inevitable because with a magnitude-7.9 earthquake, aftershocks will certainly continue. They could last for a month or even several years. We have already detected aftershocks, and there could be aftershocks reaching up to magnitude 7. Even with aftershocks, the impact on China will remain relatively minor. However, other countries, including neighboring countries like Thailand, may experience more significant effects."
