Responding to a question on the recent spate of earthquakes in China's Xizang, Myanmar, and near the Tonga islands, Robert J. Geller, seismologist and professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, says the occurrence of large earthquakes is a matter of probability rather than definite connection. He says that accurate predictions are not possible, and the best way to be resilient against earthquakes is proper preparation in advance.
