Lai Ching-te has outlined 17 strategies to counter what he calls growing threats to Taiwan. The new restrictions have sparked a backlash. CGTN reporter Huang Yichang spoke with two representatives from Taiwan to discuss the consequences of increasingly restrictive policies toward the mainland.
CHIEN CHUN NAN, Vice supervisor, National association of Taiwan enterprises "Lai Ching-te has proposed designating the mainland as a so-called 'hostile foreign force,' which puts Taiwan in a dangerous position and is even more detrimental to its long-term development. How can a region that lacks stability and security achieve sustainable growth? Taiwan should be leveraging the mainland market as a foundation to expand its business globally, yet it is choosing to go in the opposite direction—an approach that is short-sighted and self-defeating. While his restrictive policies may create temporary obstacles, they cannot stop the inevitable trend of deeper cross-strait integration."
WANG YU-CHING, Taiwan youth, Internet influencer "Right now, in Taiwan society, after Lai Ching-te's 17 policies, the people in Taiwan are kind of scared because the green terror is coming into their lives. For example, if a person says 'I want unification in China' in public, Lai Ching-te's regime will use a lot of resources to suppress them. These individuals face not just legal prosecution, but also persecution on the internet. You can see a lot of online attacks. The government has used various tactics to punish and even attempt to eliminate those voices. I think Lai is not only going against the values of Chinese society but also violating human rights. Many people in Taiwan have said on the internet that Lai's regime completely misunderstands international human rights."
