China's Zheng Qinwen has kicked off her campaign at the WTA Charleston Open with a routine victory over Greece's Maria Sakkari, extending her impressive clay-court winning streak to 12 matches.

In her first appearance since her tournament debut in 2022, Zheng ousted the former World No. 3 Sakkari, who reached the semifinals last year, with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-1.

At just 22 years old, Zheng now holds a 2-2 record against Sakkari, and her current streak on clay dates back to her gold medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics at Roland Garros, following her title defense in Palermo. Zheng is set to face No. 13 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium in the round of 16.

Meanwhile, No. 10 seed Yulia Putintseva broke a four-match losing streak by defeating Chinese qualifier Zhang Shuai in the second round. Putintseva now boasts a seven-match winning streak against Zhang, a run that stretches back to 2020.
