The Chinese government has issued a strong condemnation of the United States' recent decision to impose additional tariffs on various trading partners, including China, according to Xinhua News Agency. The Chinese government asserts that such measures violate the legitimate rights of nations, breach World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, undermine the rules-based multilateral trading system, and destabilize the global economic order.
Washington's move defies fundamental economic principles and disregards the balanced outcomes of multilateral trade negotiations, despite the US having long benefited from international trade, said Chinese officials.
By weaponizing tariffs to exert extreme pressure and pursue self-interest, the US is engaging in blatant unilateralism, protectionism, and economic coercion.
Under the guise of seeking "reciprocity" and "fairness," the US is pushing a zero-sum game that prioritizes "America First" at the expense of the global economic order. This attempt to subordinate international public interests to US hegemony will inevitably face widespread opposition from the international community.
As a nation with a civilization rooted in integrity and mutual respect, China adheres to the principles of sincerity and trust. China does not provoke trouble, but is also not afraid of it, pressure and threats are not the right approach in dealing with Beijing.
China has already taken – and will continue to take – resolute measures to safeguard its sovereignty, security, and development interests. The essence of China-US economic relations should be mutually beneficial, and Washington should heed the expectations of both nations and the world by halting its tariff-driven suppression and respecting China's legitimate development rights.
As the world's second-largest economy and consumer market, China remains unwavering in its commitment to wider openness. The country will further advance institutional opening-up, refining regulations, standards, and management systems to foster a world-class, market-driven, and law-based business environment. By promoting trade and investment liberalization, China aims to share development opportunities globally and achieve win-win outcomes.
Economic globalization is an irreversible trend in human progress, and the WTO-centered multilateral trading system has been instrumental in driving global trade and sustainable growth. Isolationism and beggar-thy-neighbor policies are doomed to backfire. The international community must work together to steer globalization toward greater openness, inclusiveness, and balanced development.
Development is a universal right, not a privilege reserved for a few. Global affairs should be decided through collective consultation, not unilateral diktats. Trade wars and protectionism benefit no one – only genuine multilateralism can ensure shared prosperity.
Countries must uphold the principles of wide consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits, reject all forms of unilateralism, and safeguard the UN-centered international system and the WTO-led multilateral trading regime. The vast majority of nations that believe in fairness and justice will stand on the right side of history.
China has declared that the world needs fairness, not hegemony, urging the US to abandon its coercive tactics and return to the path of cooperation.
