In Jiexiu City, Shanxi Province, people celebrate the Cold Food Festival by making colorful animal-shaped buns to remember their ancestors and lost loved ones. The festival is held just one day before Qingming, the tomb-sweeping day in China. It's said to commemorate Jie Zitui, a loyal minister from over 2,000 years ago who lived with his mother in Jiexiu. On the festival, locals avoid using fire to cook and only eat cold food, such as the steamed buns they prepare in advance.
