It's been a week since a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar, killing over three thousand people and injuring more than four-thousand-five hundred others. The focus is now on providing aid to thousands of survivors and staving off disease outbreaks. But, as Cen Ziyuan reports, despite the passing of the 72-hour golden window, rescue teams in the hard-hit city of Mandalay have continued their search.
It is a race against the clock. On Wednesday, there was a report of someone trapped inside a hotel building. By then, it had been more than 120 hours since the earthquake hit Myanmar.
PAN ZHAOHU, Rescuer, China Search and Rescue Team "They said that three of them climbed out. When the earthquake occurred, they were in a banquet hall. When the banquet hall collapsed, there was a wall that separated the four of them."
The Golden Village hotel is located in a busy neighborhood of Mandalay. It used to be an eight-story building.
TIAN YUAN, Rescuer, China Search and Rescue Team "When we did a search, he gave us a response. He responded both verbally, and by knocking on the wall. We suddenly had hope and were quite excited."
PAN ZHAOHU, Rescuer, China Search and Rescue Team "We heard his voice. It came from below us, but we did not know the exact location."
They need to find him.
PAN ZHAOHU, Rescuer, China Search and Rescue Team "Once we opened a hole, we were able to talk to him. We listened for clues to his location. When we talked to him, he said he wanted water."
Rescuers struggled to reach him.
PAN ZHAOHU, Rescuer, China Search and Rescue Team "We saw him with (the help of) a snake-shaped monitor, but we couldn't reach him. We opened a hole as big as a basketball."
The man is eventually rescued days after being trapped under the rubble. He's wrapped in a blanket to keep him warm.
This is not Pan Zhaohu's first time participating in an international rescue mission. He was part of a team helping survivors following the earthquake in Turkiye-Syria in 2023.
PAN ZHAOHU, Rescuer, China Search and Rescue Team "The survivor I have rescued who was trapped the longest was under the rubble for more than 150 hours. I think these life miracles do happen."
In the meantime, rescuers continue to go street by street despite the hot weather, rain and humidity, hoping they can be part of another miracle. Cen Ziyuan, CGTN, Mandalay, Myanmar.
