The White House announced on April 2 that U.S. President Donald Trump declared a national emergency. This decision aims to boost the United States' competitive edge, safeguard national sovereignty and strengthen both national and economic security. The statement noted that Trump would put in place a "baseline" tariff of 10 percent on imports from all other nations starting on April 5.

CGTN Stringer took to the streets of New York to hear local residents' views on the "tariff stick." U.S. attorney Joseph Morgan stated, "He is an authoritarian. He is doing tremendous damage to this country. He should be thrown out of office... American consumers are going to lose this, 100 percent." Similarly, U.S. diplomat Jenna Morris expressed concern, believing that the tariff policy will severely impact the global trade order, and the world is realizing that the U.S. is not a reliable trading partner. This policy has also caused widespread dissatisfaction among developing countries internationally.
