The FIE Junior and Cadet World Championships got underway in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, on Monday with 15-year-old fencer Pan Qimiao claiming a bronze medal for host nation China in the junior women's individual sabre.
Defending champion Pan came in ranked as the Junior World No. 1, and battled through a fever to dominate the early rounds. Her semifinal bout against USA's Alexandra Lee also began promisingly as she took a 3-0 lead.
But Pan fell behind to trail 8-7 at the intermission, before rallying to level the score following a tactical timeout. Then it was Lee's turn to battle back as she regained control, and surged to a 15-9 victory to advance to the final. Neutral athlete Aleksandra Mikjailova then took the title, after dominating Lee 15-3 in the gold medal contest.
In the junior men's individual sabre, Cui Zhanshuo finished in 13th place, which was the best result among China's four participants. Italy's Cosimo Bertini won the title.
