As the ongoing tariff policies continue to shape the U.S. economy, many are wondering about the long-term impacts. Could these tariffs lead to a recession? And how are they affecting everyday Americans?

YAN AN The Robert Bendheim Chair Professor in Economics and Financial Policy, Fordham University "If the tariff remains in place for a long time, for the extended period, I think it could cause trouble to the United States. Right? They will raise the costs, increase inflation, and raise uncertainty for business. The businesses and consumers in the U.S. are increasingly concerned about the tariffs, about potential inflation, about the political uncertainties, the business uncertainties, you linked to the tariff policies. So such concerns, could end up with the economic downturn. So the tariff may not directly cause inflation, but I do think that the deglobalization will decrease efficiency for the production, therefore, increase the cost of products, therefore will lead to the inflation. When the inflation increases, when the jobs are not coming back, I think the recession likely will happen. The business may not be willing to hire. The CEOs they may not have any incentive because of uncertainty. They have no confidence in themselves to invest in the new factories or equipment. American consumers may not spend because of the fear of the higher prices. So the economy may end up shrinking."
