The ancient sheng musical instrument originated in China and was introduced to Japan over a millennium ago. While the Japanese sho has retained much of its traditional form, its Chinese counterpart evolved significantly over time, now featuring a three-octave range. Recently, Chinese musician Wu Tong and Japanese musician Mayumi Miyata shared a stage in Beijing, celebrating the shared heritage and artistic developments of these historic instruments.
