Chen Yufei beats Akane Yamaguchi at Badminton Asia Championships

Chen Yufei of China beat No. 3 seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 21-19, 21-13 in the women's singles encounter at the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, east China's Zhejiang Province, on Friday, advancing to the semifinals.

Chen survived a hard-fought first game against the 2019 champion, but clinched it 21-19. Then she picked up a 21-13 victory in the second game for a spot in the last four.

In the men's singles event, home world No. 1 Shi Yuqi was eliminated after a quarterfinal defeat to Singapore's Loh Kean Yew. The Chinese narrowly lost the opening game 21-19 before bouncing back to claim the second 21-13. However, Loh seized control in the decider and closed it out 21-16 for victory.

In the women's doubles, Olympic gold medalists Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan advanced to the semifinals after beating fellow Chinese players Li Yijing and Luo Xumin 21-12, 21-15.

Home pair Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang made the last four by beating Indonesia's Muhammad Shohibul and Daniel Marthin 21-19, 21-19 in the men's doubles.

In the mixed doubles, China's top seeds Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin knocked out Indonesian duo Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari 21-14, 21-15 to progress into the semifinals.
