Chinese duo Chen Jia and Chen Yiwen engaged in a thrilling battle in the women's 3-meter springboard final at the World Aquatics Diving World Cup in Windsor, Canada, on Sunday, before Chen Jia prevailed to claim the gold medal.
Chen Jia, 20, entered the competition as a wild card invitee after topping the podium at the previous World Cup stop in Guadalajara, Mexico, in early April. She performed consistently in all five rounds, and tallied an overall score of 379.05 points, which was even higher than Chen Yiwen's winning total from last year's Paris Summer Olympics.
"My score is a little bit lower than at the Mexico leg, and I feel tired after these two consecutive stops," Chen Jia said. "So it is normal that I scored lower. I need to perfect the details and improve on the gestures."
Chen Yiwen earned 369.90 points to finish second. Maddison Keeney of Australia placed third with 336.55 points.
In the evening's other two finals, Cheng Zilong of China won the men's 10m platform final with 511.10 points. Standing next to him on the podium as runner-up was his compatriot Zhu Zifeng, while Oleksiy Sereda of Ukraine came in third.
The women's 10m synchronized platform title went to a Chinese pair as well, after Lu Wei and Zhang Minjie dominated the final with 327.36 points. Gabriela Agundez and Alejandra Estudillo of Mexico finished second, while Lois Toulson and Maisie Bond of Britain rounded out the podium in third.
Chinese divers won a total of eight golds, three silvers, and one bronze in Windsor, The next stop, which will serve as this season's Super Final, is scheduled to take place May 2-4 in Beijing.
