Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday that China-Vietnam relations are rooted in the people, sustained by the people and empowered by the people.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting with representatives of the Chinese and Vietnamese People's Friendship Meeting in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, alongside General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee To Lam and Vietnamese President Luong Cuong.
Xi noted that over the years, the peoples of China and Vietnam have stood together through thick and thin, sharing weal and woe, and have jointly written a glorious chapter in the history of China-Vietnam friendship.
He emphasized that this friendship has taken root and flourished through mutual support and solidarity between the two peoples.
He reaffirmed China and Vietnam's commitment to the "six mores" – stronger political mutual trust, more substantive security cooperation, deeper practical cooperation, a more solid popular foundation, closer coordination in multilateral affairs, and better management and resolution of differences. Xi said both countries firmly support each other in pursuing socialist paths suited to their national conditions and will continue advancing the socialist cause.
Both sides, he said, are actively implementing the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, upholding international fairness and justice, and standing on the right side of history and the progressive side of the times – contributing positive energy to Asia and the world.
People are the creators of history, Xi said, adding that the endorsement and support of the two peoples provide a solid foundation for building a China-Vietnam community with a shared future.
He highlighted the importance of youth in carrying forward this friendship, announcing that China will invite Vietnamese youth to China over the next three years for "Red Study Tours."
To Lam said the the holding of Chinese and Vietnamese People's Friendship Meeting was of great significance, as it coincides with Xi's historic visit, the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, and the China-Vietnam Year of People-to-People Exchanges.
He emphasized that friendly cooperation has always been the mainstream of China-Vietnam relations, and the Vietnamese side will always remember the selfless assistance provided by the CPC, the Chinese government and the Chinese people in Vietnam's national independence, reunification and development.
To Lam added that young people are the hope for carrying forward and developing the traditional friendship, and said youth from both sides should shoulder this historical mission to ensure the relationship is passed down from generation to generation.
Before the event, Xi, accompanied by To Lam and Luong Cuong, viewed a photo exhibition marking 75 years of China-Vietnam diplomatic ties.
After the meeting, the three leaders jointly launched the "Red Study Tours" project.
Xi, To Lam and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also witnessed the launch of the China-Vietnam railway cooperation mechanism.
