A still from "Better Me, Better You" /15th Beijing International Film Festival
Synopsis:
"Better Me, Better You" tells a story of escape and rebirth. Bai Liping, a woman from northeast China who has been scarred by domestic violence, struggles to survive on the fringes of a big city. Tang Shuying, a sharp-tongued elderly woman living alone in Beijing, clings to a house full of memories and unresolved emotions. When fate brings these two vastly different women under the same roof, their initial hostility gradually gives way to revealing their vulnerabilities. Through each other, they begin to confront the truths they have long avoided.
Why we recommend it:
This is a healing gem about female strength and unexpected friendship. With delicate storytelling, the film portrays the most authentic form of redemption – perhaps healing doesn't mean forgetting the pain, but finding someone willing to remember it with you. Through a restrained yet warm narrative, it weaves together social issues like aging and domestic violence into everyday moments. This is not just the story of two women, but a reflection of all those still seeking a glimmer of light in the darkness. Some encounters may not change the ending, but they prove that you are worthy of kindness.
