Synopsis:
Russian poet Andrei Gorchakov, accompanied by his interpreter Eugenia, travels to Italy to research the life of an 18th-century Russian composer. In an ancient town, they encounter a mysterious old man named Domenico, who is seen by locals as mad. However, Andrei finds meaning in Domenico's madness and becomes deeply drawn to him. Drifting between fragmented reality and surreal dreams, Andrei is unable to detach himself. His yearning for his homeland and the pain of separation from his family weave together into a complex web of emotions, merging into a lifelong nostalgia.
Why we recommend it:
The 15th Beijing International Film Festival has curated a special "In Memory of Tarkovsky" program within its "Tribute and Commemoration" section, offering audiences the chance to revisit several classic works by the legendary director and reflect on his profound influence on the history of cinema. Among these is "Nostalghia," presented in a newly restored 4K format. The film won both the Best Director Award and the FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) Prize at the 36th Cannes Film Festival. It tells the story of a man far from home, consumed by longing for his homeland. With its emotional intensity and signature dreamlike imagery, "Nostalghia" stands as a monumental achievement in cinema history.
