A recent survey by the Pew Research Center, the results of which were released on Thursday, suggests a decline in the number of Americans viewing China unfavorably.

The survey indicated that, for the first time in five years, the percentage of Americans with an unfavorable opinion of China dropped from 81 percent in 2024 to 77 percent in 2025. Additionally, those with a very unfavorable view of China decreased by 10 percentage points compared to last year.

The share of Americans who call China an enemy of the U.S., rather than a partner or a competitor, has also fallen. One-third now hold this view, the survey suggests, down from 42 percent last year.

The survey was conducted among 3,605 U.S. adults from March 24 to 30 this year. It took place amid escalating economic tensions between the U.S. and China, fueled by U.S. tariff hikes on China.

U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 10 percent additional tariff on imports from China in February and increased the tariff to 20 percent in early March, both before the survey was fielded.
