China's National Health Commission on Wednesday condemned the United States for smearing China again with an article on COVID-19 origins tracing, calling it a move to politicize a scientific matter.
A spokesperson for the NHC made the remarks following the publication of the article on the White House website that once again pointed the finger at a research lab in Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province, as the alleged source of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"The so-called 'reasons' cited in the article have no scientific foundation, and the so-called 'evidence' is entirely fabricated," the NHC spokesperson stated. "The U.S. has repeatedly framed and vilified China over the origins of the virus, revealing its malicious intent to politicize a scientific issue. Such tactics have long been discredited by the global scientific community."
The spokesperson emphasized that U.S. efforts to weaponize the pandemic in order to contain China are doomed to fail.
Additionally, the official noted that mounting clues and evidence suggest COVID-19 may have emerged in the U.S. even earlier. "The next phase of origin-tracing should take place in the U.S.," the spokesperson added.
"We call on the U.S. to stop its smear campaign against China, reflect seriously on its own handling of the pandemic, and provide a responsible explanation to the international community," said the spokesperson.
