Shozo Ichiyama at BJIFF 2025: Eager to discover new Chinese films

08:51

At the 15th Beijing International Film Festival, CGTN's Zhang Meng spoke with Shozo Ichiyama, programming director of the Tokyo International Film Festival and longtime producer of director Jia Zhangke's iconic films like "Caught by the Tides," "Mountains May Depart" and "Ash Is Purest White."

Ichiyama highlighted his deep connection with Chinese cinema and his ongoing mission to introduce it to global audiences. "Usually I'm looking for something that's very new to me. If it's a repetition or limitation of existing styles, it's not that fascinating. But when a film brings something fresh, it's exciting. I'm always very happy to discover many new and good films from China."

With more Chinese films gaining popularity in Japan, Ichiyama said the momentum is growing – and so is his admiration for the new wave of Chinese filmmakers.
