Professor Li Cheng of the University of Hong Kong has identified four systemic crises in the United States that drive irrational anti-China rhetoric: zero-sum bipartisan politics, economic disparity, racial tensions and culture wars. Li argues that these internal pressures, which persist beyond the Trump era, have created a desperate need for external scapegoats.
