Zhao Xintong of China booked his place in the quarterfinals at the World Snooker Championship for the first time after completing a 13-10 win over his compatriot Lei Peifan in Sheffield, England, on Sunday.
Zhao, leading 10-6 overnight, withstood a late surge from his opponent, the first-round conqueror of defending champion Kyren Wilson, who won three straight frames after Zhao had moved to within one of victory at 12-7.
Zhao settled his nerves, however, and opened up with 62 points in the 23rd frame, forcing Lei to concede. Zhao will face qualifier Chris Wakelin in the last eight.
Home world No. 1 Judd Trump hit his 100th century break of the season as he moved to a 10-6 lead against fellow Englishman Shaun Murphy. Trump shrugged off a slow start to the second-round clash to lead 5-3 at the end of the first session, his main regret being the miss of a difficult yellow when on 98 in the final frame of the session, leaving him stuck on 98 centuries for a little longer.
The evening installment began with a tense frame full of misses, fouls and snookers, but from then on it was a contest of big breaks, and one which Trump edged. There was another near miss for Trump in the 12th frame as his break ended on 97, but he took the 14th with a 106. Shortly afterwards, he received a rare mid-frame standing ovation after sinking a black that took his next effort to 105 – it would eventually reach 132 as he cleared the table.
It is the second time Trump has reached a century of centuries with Neil Robertson, who had a record 103 in the 2013-14 campaign, the only other player to achieve it.
Meanwhile, China's Si Jiahui holds a 9-7 advantage over Ben Woollaston in their second-round clash.
Seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan of England and Luca Brecel of Belgium are both one frame off and on the verge of reaching the quarterfinals. O'Sullivan won the afternoon session 6-2 and had an overnight lead of 12-4 as he will conclude his match against Pang Junxu of China on Monday evening.
Brecel stormed into an 11-1 lead over China's Ding Junhui, but Ding held him up, and the match will resume with a 12-4 advantage for Brecel.
