Si edges Woollaston to reach World Snooker Championship quarterfinals

China's Si Jiahui booked his place in the quarterfinals at the World Snooker Championship for the second time in three years after beating Ben Woollaston 13-10 in Sheffield, England, on Monday.

The 13th seed held a 9-7 overnight lead heading into the third session, but Woollaston was able to win the 18th frame with a century break of 110 to level the match at 9-9.

The two then started to trade the lead. 2023 semi-finalist Si took the 19th frame with a break of 51, before the Englishman pulled one back with a 90-7 win to tie the score again at 10-10.

But 23-year-old Si took control after that. He first went on a run of 63 in the 21st frame to regain the lead at 11-10. And in the 22nd, Si's confidence was there for all to see when he had a century break of 126, which included some spectacular shots to go 12-10 ahead and one frame away from victory.

Si eventually took it 13-10 and followed compatriot Zhao Xintong into the last eight where he will face seven-time champion Ronnie O'Sullivan. Afterwards he revealed that nerves nearly got the better of him.

"We had a break when the match was tied up at 10-all, and I went to the practice table to keep my hands warm. I took a couple of shots there to ease myself a bit as I was a bit of nervous. This helped me to play better in the last three frames, and I eventually won the match in the end," said Si.

In other action, Chinese ace Ding Junhui was knocked out by Luca Brecel. Ding was behind 12-4 before the final session and never really mounted a serious comeback. Belgium's 2023 world champion won the contest 13-4 with a break of 71.

Meanwhile, O'Sullivan outplayed China's Pang Junxu 13-4, as he made two centuries and ten half-centuries with a break of 95 to complete a routine victory.
