Xu Mengran, a computer science textbook editor by profession, is also a dedicated Peking Opera enthusiast. Having started her journey with Peking Opera at just six years old, she has grown to master the art's intricate blend of singing, speaking, acting, and movement. For Xu, the rhythm and structure of Peking Opera mirror the precision required in her editorial work.

In 2024, Xu participated in the inaugural Peking Opera Fans Conference hosted by China Media Group, an event that brought together enthusiasts and professionals from diverse backgrounds. Under the guidance of renowned artist Zhang Ping, she performed alongside some of the most respected figures in the field, an experience she describes as both humbling and exhilarating.

While her day job revolves around publishing, Xu's commitment to Peking Opera remains a constant. She attends a Peking Opera club every Saturday, where members from various professions, including public servants and teachers, rehearse together. "Peking Opera is both a way to relax and a nourishment for the soul," says Xu.

She also sees Peking Opera as a powerful expression of modern ideals. "The female lead characters in works like "The Riverside Pavilion" and "Matchmaker for the Successful Candidate" represent qualities of today's women — independent and in control of their own destiny," she reflects.

For Xu, Peking Opera isn't just a hobby; it's a source of personal growth and an important bridge between tradition and modernity.
