Gabriel Diallo of Canada shocked Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria to reach his first Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Masters quarterfinal at the Madrid Open on Wednesday.

As the tournament's favorite, Dimitrov claimed the first set 7-5. However, then Diallo, who competed as a lucky loser for the third time in four appearances at a Masters event, fended off two match points like he did in his win over China's Zhang Zhizhen in the first round at Indian Wells in March, and kept that tenacity going to get the upper hand in the second set's tiebreak.

The 23-year-old saved three match points before winning the tiebreak 9-7 with an ace.

Then the world No.78 took the third set 6-4 when the Bulgarian hit wide. Diallo will move up 25 spots to a career-high ranking of 53 and could go higher if he can beat Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti and reach the semifinals.

Musetti has guaranteed a place in the top 10 for the first time after an impressive win over Alex de Minaur of Australia to reach the quarterfinals.

Musetti showed his prowess on clay by winning the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He reached his maiden Masters 1000 final in Monte-Carlo less than three weeks ago. The 23-year-old held a 2-1 edge against De Minaur and he clinched the first set 6-4.

The second was easier. Musetti claimed it 6-2 when the Australian's backhand hit the net. With this victory, he will become the sixth Italian man since 1973 to crack the Top 10 on Monday as his pursuit of a maiden Masters trophy continued.
