On April 29, U.S. President Donald Trump personally called Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to express his dissatisfaction upon learning that Amazon was considering labeling additional costs due to tariffs on some product pages. The White House viewed the move as a "hostile and political act." In response, Amazon released a statement that the plan was never implemented on its main website and had only been discussed as a possibility for its low-cost platform, Haul, but was ultimately not approved.
CGTN Stringer took to the streets of New York, interviewing Americans of various professions and ages to get their thoughts on the matter. Most of them supported Amazon and said they would like to see the additional tariff costs shown on product prices.
A teacher named Kateleen Mcdougal said she believes tariffs should be displayed just like sales tax, so the public can understand exactly where their money is being spent. She added that the government should not try to hide the consequences of tariffs, as doing so misleads the public. Banker Tim Wallace said companies should indicate the extra tariff costs to make pricing more transparent.
