The Footwear Distributors & Retailers of America (FDRA) is asking U.S. President Donald Trump to exempt shoes from reciprocal tariffs. Brands like Nike, Adidas and Skechers are among the 76 footwear companies that signed the letter, dated April 29.

"Given the nature of the U.S. footwear industry, American footwear businesses and families face an existential threat from such substantial cost increases. Hundreds of businesses face the prospect of closure," read the letter.

The FDRA warns that tariffs of up to 37.5 percent on children's shoes could force companies to shut down, put people out of work and leave Americans scrambling for affordable shoes.
