The fight against fentanyl: Chinese action, U.S. inaction

05:00

Representatives from China and the United States are meeting this weekend in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss the contentious issue of tariffs. Back in February, in an attempt to justify the imposition of additional tariffs, the U.S. claimed that China was the primary source of fentanyl used by American drug addicts. However, China, the first country in the world to implement permanent controls on fentanyl-related substances, has found no evidence of illegal exports. In contrast to China's firm actions, the U.S. government has shown inconsistency in its drug control and anti-drug policies, opting instead to shift blame onto other countries. So, are Washington's accusations merely a bargaining chip in trade talks?
